A carefully researched article with extensive footnotes.  The insurmountable difficulty in measuring the effect is measuring the road not taken:  What would our wages be if they stayed at the pre-Reagan level of illegals—estimated 1.1 million in 1970?  The issues aren’t who would fill those so-called unwanted jobs, but rather its effect upon the job market.  Pay more, and unwanted jobs become wanted—as they were in the 60s. 

1.  The median wage of a high school drop out is $350/wk, for a Mexican illegal resident (MIR) is $326.  The competition falls heavies on Negroes and high school dropouts.

LAWS:

* For decades, immigration authorities have alerted ("no-match-letters")^[171] employers of mismatches between reported employees' social security cards and the actual names of the card holders. On September 1, 2007, a federal judge halted this practice of alerting employers of card mismatches. Social Security Administration was to send out 141,000 no-match letters, covering 8.7 million employees. (Wikipedia).  This doesn’t entail that the employeer needs to terminate the illegal’s job, and the risk of prosecution is negligable.  The government responded by vitiating the rule.  There are as of 3/2008 17.8 million discrepancies in the SSA database that would result in no match letters.      

Solution, fine the employer:

Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll^[211] indicates that 77% of respondents believe employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants should be punished for their actions.(Wikipedia).  Fine them and their won’t be jobs for them.
